Day2 V2X is changing the paradigm of V2X usage from “everybody, listen to what I do” to “everybody, listen to what I sense”. Day1 V2X connects vehicles to tell each other their location, speed, heading and other vehicle properties. In V2X Day2 use-cases, they also tell which objects they see. Day1 V2X expands vehicle sensing from visible road-users to obstructed, connected road-users.  Day2 V2X adds the obstructed, non-connected road-users.

This is a dramatic addition. Pedestrians crossing streets, bicyclists entering intersections or old cars stopped at the side of the road will not be left out. They will become part of the objects observed by V2X equipped cars and information about their whereabouts will be exchanged on the V2X network.

Day2 should use the latest and greatest communication technology. Next generation standards were developed with the specific requirements of Day2 use-cases in mind. Higher throughput, higher reliability and shorter latency are needed for the more demanding Day2 use-cases. Day2 will use 5G-based technology, while Day1 uses 4G in the case of C-V2X. In the case of DSRC, there will be a jump of 4 technology generations, from WiFi 2 based technology in Day1 to WiFi 6 based technology in Day2.

Day1 is making its first steps in the market. Mass-deployment in all vehicles is still a few years ahead. Day2 is not likely to start before Day1 will be a common feature. Yet, development should start now. The automotive design cycle is very long. Any technology, in particular a safety technology, should be mature for deployment. There are several long poles. For example, achieving interoperability of Day2 will be much more challenging than Day1 as the number of configuration options is significantly higher. The use-cases are much more complicated, and achieving reliable and mature operation will take time. But none of this can start without having a chipset. It is the gate for everything. The industry is eagerly waiting to start using the new communication technologies.

The Day2 ramp will be much faster than that of Day1. The V2X system includes multiple components largely contributing to overall feature cost, like antennas, cabling, installation or security. Day2 capabilities have a minor impact on those. Day2 can share the same antennas, cabling, installation and other system elements with Day1. The incremental hardware needed for Day2, and consequently the cost, are far lower than the added hardware and cost of Day1, simplifying the business case equations. Huge safety and comfort benefits will be available at a low cost. Furthermore, drivers experiencing the benefit of Day1 use-cases will demand to move forward fast and rip the benefits of the Day2 use-case
