Autotalks, a world leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions, and Canyon, a world-leading direct-to-consumer bike manufacturer, have announced a technology development partnership to help reduce cycling accidents and improve cycling safety in traffic.

Canyon will pioneer the first-of-its-kind mass integration of V2X technology into some of its premium e-bikes, allowing other V2X equipped vehicles and infrastructure to receive a notification when a Canyon bike is nearby. The collaboration adds an exciting dimension to the connectivity already in place on many e-bikes within the company’s range.

Equipping bikes with this cutting-edge V2X technology will help bicycles get noticed on the road, increasing the safety of cyclists, and giving them extra confidence on the road. V2X technology features in a growing number of connected motor vehicles. It allows cars and lorries to communicate with V2X bikes and be alerted in advance of potentially dangerous situations. Autotalks’ V2X solution supports both European standards (DSRC) and US/Chinese (LTE-V2X) standards.

Many accidents involving bikes occur when a bike crosses an intersection, especially where visibility is limited. Bikes can reach intersections at speeds of 25km/h or more. In such situations, lapses in concentration from drivers can result in vehicles pulling out, causing the rider to swerve or crash. Additional non-line-of-sight situations are when a rider appears in a driver’s blind spot, when a car turns across an oncoming lane of traffic or a bicycle lane, when the rider is hidden by a large vehicle, such as a bus or a truck, or simply when the driver doesn’t look. In the future, the technology will be able to automatically reduce a car’s speed or prevent a door from opening if a bicycle is passing on an inside bicycle lane.

Currently, there are approximately one million cars on European roads equipped with V2X technology, and around 20,000 roadside units equipped for the infrastructure. These numbers are expected to greatly increase in the coming years.

The demonstration will take place at the SECUR (Safety Enhancement through Connected Users on the Road) Final Event in France at the end of March

Autotalks, a world leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions, announced that it is collaborating with Volkswagen (VW), Bosch eBike Systems and Commsignia to demonstrate how V2X can prevent one of the most common bike-vehicle collisions. The demonstration will take place at the SECUR (Safety Enhancement through Connected Users on the Road) Final Event, which will be held between March 29 and March 30 near Paris.

The demo by Autotalks, Volkswagen, Bosch eBike Systems and Commsignia will show an obstructed intersection use case, where the vision of the car or eBike coming from one direction is blocked and crossing the intersection might be dangerous. Thanks to the Autotalks technology integrated by Bosch eBike Systems and the Commsignia software, the V2X-enabled bicycle will communicate with a VW vehicle to alert it of its presence in order to avoid a possible crash in the obstructed intersection.

In Europe, VW’s models Golf and ID electrical vehicles are already equipped with V2X, yet do not include bike detection. Bosch eBike Systems is one of the leading manufacturers of eBike systems in the premium segment, and is comitted to safe and reponsible eBiking. The company envisions to provide eBikes with digital visibility, in order to ensure that the eBike is also part of future V2X communication.

The demo will use Autotalks’ innovative ZooZ technology. ZooZ is an advanced V2X device that was specifically developed to prevent bike and scooter accidents. Installed on the handlebar of any bicycle, it provides real-time alerts to cyclists when a vehicle equipped with V2X is posing a potential danger. Additionally, it alerts V2X-equipped vehicles and smart infrastructure to the presence of a cyclist, allowing drivers to be notified and take precautions when the cyclist may be at risk. ZooZ plug & play device is equipped with a software stack provided by V2X software provider Commsignia.

Everyday mobility may include complex situations, such as at intersections when a car driver may not see a cyclist. V2X technology help take the next step in cyclist’s protection. and allow cyclists to be noticed so that they can feel even more safe and confident at intersections.

The SECUR project is a European industrial consortium which develops a proposal for V2X testing and assessment protocols for the Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). The consortium studied the potential of connectivity, especially of V2X technologies, to improve the safety of different road users.

“The collaboration with VW and Bosch eBike Systems within the framework of the SECUR project is not only a vote of confidence in Autotalks’ pioneering micro-mobility V2X-powered technology, but also marks a step in making the world even safer for vulnerable road users. This is good news for cyclists, who will be able to feel even more confidence on the road,” said Onn Haran, Founder and CTO of Autotalks. “By adopting SECUR’s strong data-driven results, EuroNCAP should be the main catalyst leading to a widespread deployment of V2X by European OEMs, in the same way that CNCAP led the widespread deployment of V2X in China.”

Autotalks is the only provider in the world whose solution enables a unified V2X subsystem design across all regions. The single Autotalks-powered design supports both LTE-V2X technology for models sold in China and the US, and DSRC for models sold in Europe.

China’s V2X market continues gearing up towards implementation of the government’s ambitious intelligent transportation strategy. All leading automakers, local and global, are expected to start massive deployment of V2X technology in China in the coming years. The market is moving towards massive adoption of V2X as most OEMs are preparing to launch V2X-powered vehicles by 2025.

As of now, Autotalks has secured eight mass production awards with automakers, including the two new Chinese OEMs. The existing awards include wins with global OEMs that will ship V2X-powered cars in China, towards the 2025 China NCAP V2X rating. Autotalks’ former mass production award in China will go on roads in early 2023.

“Autotalks’ breakthrough in the Chinese market is real more than ever,” states Hagai Zyss, CEO of Autotalks. “The fact that two top Chinese automakers selected our end-to-end V2X solution to power their flagship vehicle brands is yet another proof of our ability to help save lives on the roads through our connected vehicle safety technology. We have developed a strong local supply chain to address the growing demand of Chinese automakers and we’re rapidly growing our footprint and track-record in the Asia-Pacific and in China in particular. We aim to win more OEM accounts in China, increase our Tier-2 and Tier-1 ecosystems, and continue hiring more people to our Chinese office.”
