The USDOT’s draft plan establishes ambitious V2X targets with 25% of signalized intersections by 2026.

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication makes it possible for vehicles to communicate with one another and with the environment. This technology is revolutionizing road safety by enabling drivers to know about dangers ahead without visibility.

On this front, a draft USDOT (U.S. Dept. of Transportation) V2X deployment plan is focused on signalized intersection deployment. These intersections operate with the assistance of a traffic signal, and they cyclically assign the right-of-way to a movement or combination of movements. As suggested by the ITS America deployment plan, signalized intersections provide a foundation for V2X deployment, including poles, power, electronics cabinets, and, in many cases, backhaul communications.

Day 1 V2X offers life-saving situational awareness alerts. Day 2 V2X applications can use sensor data shared by other vehicles and enable critical actions such as automatic braking

The new device has already been awarded for series production of a passenger car by a major automotive OEM

Autotalks, a world leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions, is unveiling its breakthrough 3rd generation chipsets, TEKTON3 and SECTON3, designed to support all upcoming V2X requirements. The new devices are the first in the world which support 5G-V2X for Day 2 scenarios.

The products have already been awarded for series production of a passenger car by a major automotive OEM. First samples are expected to be available in early 2023, and the first cars equipped with the new chipsets are set to be available in 2025.

Day 1 V2X offers life-saving situational awareness alerts. Day 2 V2X applications can make use of sensor data shared by other vehicles and enable critical actions such as automatic braking. Current devices can only issue warnings. Braking the car requires Functional Safety certification, introduced for the first time in Autotalks’ 3rd generation chipsets. This is the world’s only Functional Safety certified V2X chipsets, designed according to ISO26262 ASIL B.

The new chipsets, developed over the past several years, are designed to support all upcoming V2X requirements in both DSRC and C-V2X communication technologies, including the latest 5G-V2X (C-V2X Rel. 16/17/18) and IEEE802.11bd (next generation DSRC).

The chipsets support concurrently full backward compatibility to any Day 1 vehicle, where each vehicle reports its own data, using either DSRC or LTE-V2X (C-V2X Rel. 14), with any Day 2 technology, where the vehicle also reports all the information detected by its sensors, for “sensor sharing” or “cooperative perception”.

The chipsets will embed ultra-low-latency V2X Hardware Security Modules (eHSM) and hardware acceleration of line rate security verification. TEKTON3 also includes an optimized CPU scaled for Day 1 and Day 2 V2X stack execution.

The 3rd generation chipsets’ low power consumption will enhance the capability of Autotalks’ ZooZ micro-mobility V2X safety platform for preventing bike and scooter accidents and protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians.

“Our 3rd generation chipset is an engineering breakthrough which enabled us to achieve business breakthroughs,” noted Amos Freund, Autotalks VP R&D. “Our engineers managed to design the first V2X chipset which supports Day 1 and Day 2 scenarios concurrently, which will help protect users of cars, bikes, scooters, alongside pedestrians and will enable automatic braking. At the same time, it is capable of operating in high ambient temperatures with low power consumption and is offered at an affordable price. These achievements paved the way for the business breakthroughs. Based on their enthusiasm, we expect additional major OEMs to adopt the new architecture and integrate our 3rd generation chipsets in their vehicles. Autotalks will continue to provide the world’s best V2X hardware and software in order to protect drivers, two-wheelers, and pedestrians.”

Four bike and component companies are committed to launching ZooZ 2 pilots, and two vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) are about to start validation tests of the new micro-mobility device, which is set to prevent accidents involving electric and non-electric bikes and scooters at intersections

Autotalks’ device, running Commsignia V2X stack, was successfully used to demonstrate the protection of vulnerable road users as part of the Project SECUR, a European industrial consortium which develops V2X test protocols for Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program)

Autotalks, a V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions pioneer and leader, announces the immediate availability of ZooZ 2, the second generation of its V2X device for micro-mobility, both electric and non-electric. This technologically advanced yet affordable device was created to prevent bike and scooter accidents.

Four bike and component companies will soon launch ZooZ 2 pilots, and two vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) are about to start validation tests of the new solution. The device was successfully used to demonstrate the protection of vulnerable road users as part of the Project SECUR (Safety Enhancement through Connected Users on the Road), a European industrial consortium which develops a proposal for V2X testing and assessment protocols for the Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). The new solution operates in both DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communication) V2X and C-V2X communications technologies.

The ZooZ 2 solution is a compact V2X device, which is installed on the handlebar. It alerts the cyclist when a vehicle equipped with V2X is endangering him or her. It also informs V2X-equipped vehicles and smart infrastructure about the existence of the cyclist, for alerting a driver on endangering a cyclist.

The plug & play device is equipped with a software stack provided by V2X software provider Commsignia. Commsignia’s high-quality V2X software is interoperable with any standard V2X equipment globally.

The new device upgrades the first-generation ZooZ platform based on market feedback. The upgrades include a clearer Human Machine Interface (HMI), improved alerts to riders and better installation flexibility. The solution will also enable all road-users, including cars, bikers, scooters, motorcycles, and pedestrians, to communicate with each other through V2X and form a safety network. The device allows micro-mobility OEMs as well as light vehicle and commercial vehicle OEMs to immediately start testing, validating, and designing solutions for one of the most dangerous micro-mobility scenarios – accidents at intersections.

According to statistics from the UK, almost two thirds of cyclists killed or seriously injured were involved in collisions at, or near, a road junction, with T-junctions being the most commonly involved. The research also found that roundabouts are particularly dangerous junctions for cyclists.

Last week, Autotalks presented the ZooZ 2 device at the Velo-City Conference, the world cycling summit, which took place between June 14th and June 17th, 2022, in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

“Autotalks regards all road accidents as preventable, and those accidents involving bikes and scooters deserve special attention,” said Onn Haran, founder and CTO of Autotalks, and the inventor of the world’s first V2X chipset. “Add this to the fact the V2X is the best relevant safety technology, our pioneering V2X capabilities and Commsignia’s leading V2X stack, and you get ZooZ 2, which has the potential to eliminate road accidents involving two-wheelers at intersections. We’re committed to making our new micro-mobility safety device available immediately in order to save the lives of two-wheeler riders around the globe.”

“V2X has the power to make the invisible visible, and we are excited to leverage this capability of our technology to make roads safer for bikers. Our longtime partnership with Autotalks has already resulted in great projects, and once again we are happy to contribute to the ZooZ device with our V2X software expertise. Micromobility is on the rise, and this cooperation is a great example to showcase how V2X technology can protect all participants of the traffic,” said Szabolcs Patay, CRO of Commsignia.
