Several years ago, Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) were promised to be common today, but they can rarely be spotted. Level 3 vehicles were just introduced by Mercedes[1]. Several hundred Level 4 robotaxis are operating globally. Recently, several manufacturers had scaled back plans for self-driving technology.

Any V2X (Vehicle-to-everything) supplier is no stranger to mass deployments delay. But while V2X suffered from regulatory uncertainty, AV introduction is delayed mostly from the inability to assure correct operation under any condition. Covering all corner cases turned out to be a much greater challenge than anticipated.

AVs are trained in myriad different scenarios. But still, failing to train a specific object in a specific scenario may lead to a fault.

V2X is a unique vehicular sensor. It is the only sensor that doesn’t require training. V2X information is clearly describing the object properties. The information doesn’t depend on any external factor, hence applicable in any scenario.

The corner cases for visual perception were categorized in a research[2]. All failure cases are irrelevant to V2X except object level anomaly, where an unknown object appears on road. V2X operation is deterministic in any scenario, lighting, weather, or presence of other objects. The table below lists the main corner case categories, sorted on ascending risk level:

Case levelFailureRelevant V2X property
PixelOutlierAgnostic to dirt or lighting conditions
DomainAppearance shiftAgnostic to weather condition
ObjectContextual anomaly, where the object is in an unusual location, or collective anomaly, where the object appears in an unseen quantityAgnostic to location and quantity of similar nearby objects
ScenarioNovel or anomalous scenarios, which were not observed during the training processAgnostic to scenario

AV developers continue to expand the training set to cover as many as possible corner cases. History has taught us that this is a complex task. Can 100% certainty be achieved? Given the declining investments in AV, can that be funded?

V2X is also solving the interaction of AVs with first responders, namely police forces, ambulances, and firefighters, and even regular vehicles in some cases. Other sensors are limited and subject to assumptions about the nature and shape of interactions.

V2X is very valuable to AVs. It can accelerate the maturity of AVs. But then a question typically emerges: “How can AV rely on V2X if it’s not in 100% of the vehicles?”. That should be answered with “V2X will be aware of 100% of the vehicles sooner than you might think.  Thanks to cooperative perception, that can be achieved with V2X deployed in 10% of the vehicles.”

The timeline of AV and V2X seems to match anyhow.  If OEMs will make V2X a key element of the AV architecture, they will have additional motivation to accelerate V2X deployment, and by that elevating AVs reliability, accelerating AVs deployment, and eventually making AVs affordable.

Canyon has said that it working to equip some of its high-end e-bikes with proximity beacons spottable by cars equipped with sensors. The German company says this will “help bicycles get noticed on the road” and that this would “[increase] the safety of cyclists.”

The fitting of V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication beacons to bicycles has been trialled for several years—similar chipset technology is already deployed in static street furniture around the world—but the concept is controversial because it may increase the danger to road users not equipped with beacons.

Canyon said it is working with V2X company Autotalks. The Israeli company is currently being acquired by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. subject to customary closing conditions.

In theory, V2X technology allows sensor-equipped motor vehicles to know in advance there’s a V2X-equipped bike nearby.

A new technology developed by Israelis could help reduce cycling accidents and improve safety for bikers in traffic.

The novel chip was developed as a collaboration between Autotalks, an Israeli company that produces V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) chips for technology designed to prevent vehicle crashes, and Canyon Bicycles, a German manufacturer of road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, triathlon bikes and electric-powered (e-bikes).

Through the partnership, Canyon is set to introduce V2X technology into some of its premium e-bikes, allowing other V2X equipped bikes to receive a notification when a Canyon bike is nearby. According to the companies, this will help bicycles get seen on the road, increasing the safety of cyclists.

Autotalks, a world leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions, and Canyon, a world-leading direct-to-consumer bike manufacturer, have announced a technology development partnership to help reduce cycling accidents and improve cycling safety in traffic.

Canyon will pioneer the first-of-its-kind mass integration of V2X technology into some of its premium e-bikes, allowing other V2X equipped vehicles and infrastructure to receive a notification when a Canyon bike is nearby. The collaboration adds an exciting dimension to the connectivity already in place on many e-bikes within the company’s range.

Equipping bikes with this cutting-edge V2X technology will help bicycles get noticed on the road, increasing the safety of cyclists, and giving them extra confidence on the road. V2X technology features in a growing number of connected motor vehicles. It allows cars and lorries to communicate with V2X bikes and be alerted in advance of potentially dangerous situations. Autotalks’ V2X solution supports both European standards (DSRC) and US/Chinese (LTE-V2X) standards.

Many accidents involving bikes occur when a bike crosses an intersection, especially where visibility is limited. Bikes can reach intersections at speeds of 25km/h or more. In such situations, lapses in concentration from drivers can result in vehicles pulling out, causing the rider to swerve or crash. Additional non-line-of-sight situations are when a rider appears in a driver’s blind spot, when a car turns across an oncoming lane of traffic or a bicycle lane, when the rider is hidden by a large vehicle, such as a bus or a truck, or simply when the driver doesn’t look. In the future, the technology will be able to automatically reduce a car’s speed or prevent a door from opening if a bicycle is passing on an inside bicycle lane.

Currently, there are approximately one million cars on European roads equipped with V2X technology, and around 20,000 roadside units equipped for the infrastructure. These numbers are expected to greatly increase in the coming years.
